Since the enterprise was started, Bowerman was obsessed to improve the shoes. First he made efforts to make the uppers lighter, and using nylon material, in 1967, he came up with the famous “Marathon” model. Then he turned his focus on the soles, and instead of the formerly smooth and foamy sole, he invented a resilient, rugged rubber sole. He created the rugged rubber surface by pouring a liquid rubber mixture into his wife’s waffler. This sole structure changed the way running shoes had been designed forever. In 1974, Nike marketed the Waffle Trainer, the running shoe with a “waffle” sole, which soon became the highest selling trainers in America.
Jeff Johnson named Nike after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and the Nike logo symbolizes the wings of Nike.
